Are You Ready For Coaching?

Coaching is an active process, which means that if you want to get results, it's up to you to do the bulk of the work. Your coach is just your guide -- consider her your own personal Yoda, if you will -- who is there to point out the road signs that can lead you to your goal. Coaching is also an investment -- of time, money and energy -- so before you make that investment, it's important to make sure you're actually ready. 

So how do you know? There are markers to look for -- as well as hints that you're not quite there yet.

Here's ___________ ways to tell if you're ready for coaching. 

 

You're Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired

Have you heard yourself utter these words recently? That's a good sign you may be ready for coaching, although some people can stay in this space indefinitely. If you just like complaining, and the idea of change seems foreign to you, you're probably not ready. For many, however, this is the sign that the pain of staying the same is getting greater than the pain of change. Change comes in stages (see the next note) and often, it's a quiet, determined decision to start doing things differently that starts the process. You're done talking about it and ready to start the work. If you're even asking the question, that's a good sign you may be ready for coaching. In fact, you may have already made up your mind, and this research you're doing right now is simply confirming that you want what you already know you want. 

You've Been Cocooning Lately

There are 6 stages of change: pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, and termination. Stage 2 -- the contemplation stage -- is when a person starts to understand that change is necessary. As they move into the preparation stage, that's often when they'll cocoon -- they might stop talking about the thing they want to change as they inwardly make the mental switch from exploring the idea to emotional readiness. This period might include some serious questioning, a lot of research, and journaling about the topic. If you recognize this behavior in yourself, it's a good sign you're ready for change. 

You Can't Seem To Get From Here To There

You have an idea -- even a vague one -- of the life you want, but you can't seem to find the bridge between here and there. This is a powerful place to start with coaching because not only do you know that you don't want what you currently have, but you also know what you want instead (even if you can't quite verbalize yet, or there are a lot of unknowns). A coach can help you bring that vision into crystal clear focus, and define the action steps to get there. 

You Believe It's Possible

If you know that the life you want is actually possible, you're ready for coaching, because you know it's simply a matter of filling in what's missing and getting the help you need. 

You're Not Ready For Coaching If:

  • You don't really believe change is possible
  • You're not really willing to do the work (it's okay -- be honest)
  • You have a major life crisis to deal with (come back when things settle down!)
  • You're not willing to invest time, energy and money into your vision
  • You are content and willing to stay the same

It's important to be honest with yourself about these issues, because otherwise, you'll simply end up spending a lot of time and money with no real results. But if you're ready for coaching -- congrats! The life you want is just around the corner, and you're about to start a journey of growth and transformation that's exciting and productive.
