Wednesday, July 26 - Sister, Enough

We’ll jump ahead in the story today to Genesis 29:31-35. Almost apologetically, the text tells us that though Rachel was adored by Jacob, she was barren, but “When the Lord saw that Leah was unloved, he opened her womb?” It’s almost as if the text wants to make patriarchy and polygamy seem like it’s working, even though the story will not bear that out.

Notice Leah’s bearing of her sons, and the progression of her naming them. With each of these first sons, she confirms her shame: I am afflicted. I am hated. Maybe now, finally, my husband will love me. Until finally she decides she will simply praise God.

What must happen — how afflicted must you be — before you finally get around to praising God, even in the midst of your blessings?
