The Homeless Shelter at the Newark YMCA
Normally, I like to highlight small organizations that have been started by women who have the guts to do the most amazing things. I prefer to do that rather than large, national organizations, but in this case, I have personal experience with the good work these folks are doing.
The Newark YMCA, located at 600 Broad Street, has a 265-bed emergency shelter for displaced families. I have personally toured the facility, worked with the staff, and served the people living in the rooms. These people are the real deal.
The Y serves individuals on hard times, youth who have been kicked out their homes, families who have lost their homes to fire. If you're in the area, grab some friends and go paint a room (they are dedicated to maintaining the dignity of their residents by provided bright, cheerful rooms). If you're not nearby, send a care basket filled with toiletries and other necessities a displaced person might need.
